Mentors are encouraged to:
I will never forget the first time our Mentees, ages 5, 7, and 8 rode in our car along a local highway and spotted some grazing cows. Perhaps it was the first time they had ever seen this animal other than in pictures, but we were both amused and pleased by their repeated proclamations of "Cows"! Their expressions of amazement spoke volumes to the powerful impact that a mentoring relationship can have on disadvantaged children and youth as they are exposed to new ideas and adventures that they might otherwise not have. It must be very difficult to grow as a person if you never go outside of an area that can be covered by foot, or do not have anyone to take you to see the wonders of the world. No wonder it becomes almost impossible to "dream" about a prosperous future when you have no idea what there is to dream about. These three little boys are now almost grown and are dreaming about and will probably soon realize their dreams to go to college on a basketball scholarship,or become a petroleum geologist, and so on! Thanks to mentoring, the sky's the limit!
It is so easy for kids to fall behind in school if they miss a few days because of illness, or don't understand a new concept that is being taught. True tutoring is when an accomplished professional in a particular subject spends one-on-one time with a student who needs a little help. Sometimes it requires little more than breaking down a concept into small bite-sized pieces in order to see that light bulb come on in a child or youth's head. Ava had fallen behind in 7th grade math and was finding it almost impossible to overcome her grade of C minus. Pairing her with a local professional accountant in a tutoring relationship allowed her to have that one-on-one help over a period of several months, being introduced to new ways of thinking about math, and performing plenty of drills that allowed her grade to rise to a B+. Nothing spells success like confidence!
The mission of Destiny Independence USA is to break a generational cycle once and for all in Floyd County, GA by shepherding hundreds of economically disadvantaged young people into eventual adult employment, laying the foundations of academic success, emotional stability, and a mindset of financial independence long before they reach adulthood. DIUSA is designed to come alongside the parents of these children to assist them in preparing their children to become successful and employable adults by providing them with resources that young people need in order to be successful. We pledge to stay with these children and youth all the way through high school, college or job training, and into adult employment, training them to become moral, contributing members of society as they reach adulthood.
“There is a misconception that the only way to help the economically challenged is to give them charity. That’s not what they need. All they need is the right kind of opportunity so that they can use this ability to discover their own capabilities and change their lives.”
